Variable Data Printing, or VDP, is a form of digital printing in which elements such as text, graphics and images may be altered from one printed piece to the next without stopping the press. Using one master document and a combination of variable text and images from a database, variable data printing enables the personalization of numerous documents. Also known as (digital) print on demand, personalized printing, data-driven, or one-to-one marketing, VDP has developed into a powerful technology enabling the production of customized communications that speak personally to individual recipients and motivate them to take action. The most basic level of variable data printing involves changing the salutation or name on each printed piece while more complicated VDP uses differing amounts of customization for different markets, with text and images changing according to which segment of the market is being addressed. Each level of variable data printing begins with a basic design or template and a database of information that fills in the changeable fields.
